Project Overview
Beacon
Section titled “Beacon”Database Observability & Performance Analytics Platform
Beacon is a centralized, web-based observability platform designed to give engineering teams complete visibility into the health, performance, and behavior of their database environments. It continuously collects operational statistics, analyzes workload patterns, and surfaces actionable insights through an intuitive, interactive dashboard.
Beacon transforms raw database diagnostics into clear, contextual intelligence — enabling developers and database administrators to detect performance degradation early, diagnose bottlenecks quickly, and maintain reliable, high-performing database systems.
Purpose
Section titled “Purpose”Modern applications depend on databases that must remain fast, available, and efficient under constantly evolving workloads. As systems scale, performance issues such as slow queries, resource contention, locking conflicts, and inefficient schema design can silently accumulate and degrade user experience.
Beacon addresses this challenge by providing:
- Continuous observability — always-on collection of performance metrics and health signals.
- Deep SQL analysis — identification and ranking of costly, slow, or frequently executed queries.
- Historical context — long-term trend tracking for informed capacity and optimization decisions.
- Centralized visibility — a single platform for monitoring multiple database instances.
- Proactive alerting — early warning of critical events before they impact production.
Who Beacon Is For
Section titled “Who Beacon Is For”| Audience | How Beacon Helps |
|---|---|
| Database Administrators | Monitor health, locks, transactions, index efficiency, and resource usage across instances. |
| Backend Developers | Understand query performance, inspect execution plans, and optimize SQL. |
| DevOps / SRE Teams | Track trends, configure alerts, and maintain database reliability. |
| Engineering Managers | Access reports and historical analytics to support capacity and performance planning. |
Core Capabilities at a Glance
Section titled “Core Capabilities at a Glance”Beacon is organized into functional capability areas:
- Database Monitoring — sessions, transactions, locks, resource utilization, replication.
- Query Performance Analysis — slow query detection, execution statistics, query history.
- Execution Plan Visualization — graphical breakdown of query execution strategies.
- Schema & Relationship Exploration — browse schemas, tables, indexes, and relationships.
- Index Intelligence — detect missing, unused, duplicate, and inefficient indexes.
- Alerting & Notifications — configurable thresholds and event-based alerts.
- Reporting & Historical Analytics — trend analysis, exportable reports, performance summaries.
- SQL Playground — run and inspect queries interactively within a safe environment.
- Access & Session Management — secure, role-based access to platform capabilities.
Design Principles
Section titled “Design Principles”- Non-intrusive monitoring — collection is designed to minimize overhead on monitored systems.
- Insight over raw data — metrics are analyzed and contextualized, not just displayed.
- Unified experience — monitoring, analysis, and visualization live in one interface.
- Scalable by design — supports monitoring many database instances simultaneously.
- Actionable clarity — every view is built to answer a real operational question.
What Beacon Is Not
Section titled “What Beacon Is Not”- Not a database administration console for schema changes or data manipulation.
- Not an infrastructure monitoring tool for servers, containers, or networks.
- Not a replacement for database-native diagnostic tooling — it complements and centralizes it.
