Reporting & Historical Analytics
Beacon’s Reporting & Historical Analytics module transforms accumulated monitoring and performance data into structured reports and long-term trend analysis. It allows teams to understand how their databases have evolved over time, document performance baselines, and make evidence-based decisions about optimization, capacity, and reliability.
This module answers the question: “How has my database been performing over time, and what does the long-term picture look like?”
Capabilities
Section titled “Capabilities”1. Performance Reports
Section titled “1. Performance Reports”Beacon generates structured reports summarizing database performance over a chosen period.
| Report Element | Description |
|---|---|
| Report Title & Scope | Name, instances covered, and time range. |

| Query Highlights | Top queries by time, frequency, and resource use. |
| Index Findings | Index recommendations and usage summary. |
| Alert Summary | Alerts triggered, resolved, and outstanding. |
| Resource Trends | CPU, memory, storage, and I/O over the period. |
| Health Overview | Aggregate health indicators per instance. |
Operational value: Provides a shareable, structured record of database performance for reviews and documentation.
2. Trend Analysis
Section titled “2. Trend Analysis”Beacon tracks performance signals over extended periods to reveal directional patterns.
| Trend Signal | Description |
|---|---|
| Query Duration Trends | Whether key queries are getting faster or slower. |
| Workload Volume Trends | Growth or decline in query volume over time. |
| Resource Consumption Trends | Long-term CPU, memory, and storage patterns. |
| Session Activity Trends | Changes in connection and session behavior. |
| Lock Contention Trends | Whether blocking is becoming more or less frequent. |
| Index Usage Trends | Shifts in how indexes are used across the workload. |
| Alert Frequency Trends | Whether alert volume is rising or falling. |
Operational value: Distinguishes between transient fluctuations and genuine long-term changes that require action.
3. Historical Baselines
Section titled “3. Historical Baselines”Beacon establishes performance baselines that provide context for current behavior.
| Baseline Element | Description |
|---|---|
| Normal Ranges | Expected values for each monitored signal. |
| Time-of-Day Patterns | How behavior varies across daily cycles. |
| Day-of-Week Patterns | Weekly workload rhythms. |
| Seasonal Patterns | Longer-cycle variations where applicable. |
| Baseline Drift | How baselines themselves shift over time. |
Operational value: Enables meaningful comparison — a value is only “abnormal” relative to a known baseline.
4. Comparative Analysis
Section titled “4. Comparative Analysis”Beacon supports comparison across time periods, instances, and configurations.
| Comparison Type | Description |
|---|---|
| Period vs. Period | This week compared to last week, this month to last month. |
| Instance vs. Instance | Compare performance across database instances. |
| Before vs. After | Impact of a change, deployment, or optimization. |
| Peak vs. Off-Peak | Behavior under different load conditions. |
Operational value: Provides context for interpreting performance and validating the effect of changes.
5. Capacity & Growth Analytics
Section titled “5. Capacity & Growth Analytics”Beacon analyzes growth patterns to support capacity planning.
| Signal | Description |
|---|---|
| Storage Growth Rate | How quickly data volume is increasing. |
| Table Growth Ranking | Which tables are growing fastest. |
| Index Growth | Storage consumed by indexes over time. |
| Connection Growth | Changes in concurrent connection demand. |
| Workload Growth | Increases in query volume and complexity. |
| Projected Thresholds | Estimated time until capacity limits are reached. |
Operational value: Gives teams lead time to plan infrastructure changes before limits are hit.
6. Report Scheduling & Delivery
Section titled “6. Report Scheduling & Delivery”Beacon can generate and deliver reports automatically.
| Capability | Description |
|---|---|
| Scheduled Reports | Reports generated at defined intervals (daily, weekly, monthly). |
| Recipient Configuration | Define who receives each scheduled report. |
| Delivery Channels | Reports delivered via configured channels. |
| Report Templates | Predefined structures for consistent reporting. |
| Ad-Hoc Generation | Generate reports on demand for any period. |
Operational value: Ensures stakeholders receive regular, consistent performance summaries without manual effort.
7. Report Export
Section titled “7. Report Export”Beacon allows reports and underlying data to be exported for external use.
| Export Format | Description |
|---|---|
| Structured Documents | Formatted reports suitable for sharing and archiving. |
| Tabular Data | Raw or summarized data for further analysis. |
| Chart Images | Visualizations suitable for presentations. |
| Scheduled Exports | Automated export and delivery of recurring reports. |
Operational value: Enables integration with existing documentation, review, and compliance processes.
8. Audit & Compliance Reporting
Section titled “8. Audit & Compliance Reporting”Beacon supports reporting needs tied to governance and oversight.
| Report Type | Description |
|---|---|
| Access Reports | Who accessed which databases and when. |
| Change Reports | Configuration and rule changes over time. |
| Alert Response Reports | How alerts were handled and resolved. |
| Retention Reports | What data is retained and for how long. |
Operational value: Supports organizational requirements for accountability and traceability.

Operational Scenarios
Section titled “Operational Scenarios”Scenario 1 — Monthly performance review A scheduled monthly report is delivered to the engineering team, summarizing query performance, alert activity, and capacity trends for the period. The team reviews it in their regular meeting.
Scenario 2 — Validating an optimization After optimizing a set of queries, the team uses Before vs. After comparison to quantify the improvement in average duration and resource consumption.
Scenario 3 — Planning for growth Storage growth analytics project that the primary database will reach 90% capacity in approximately four months. The team begins infrastructure planning well in advance.
Scenario 4 — Establishing a performance baseline After a period of stable operation, Beacon establishes baselines for key signals. Future alerts and comparisons are evaluated relative to these baselines rather than arbitrary fixed values.
Summary
Section titled “Summary”Beacon’s Reporting & Historical Analytics module gives teams the long view. By generating structured reports, tracking trends, establishing baselines, and projecting capacity, it supports informed decision-making, validates change, and documents performance over time — turning accumulated data into lasting operational knowledge.
